Big
Brown Bats Eptesicus
fuscus
One
of the most common North American bats, its range extends to northern South
America and on many Caribbean islands. This
large bat is active earlier in the spring and later in the fall than most
species of northern bat, and have been observed being active on warm winter
days. Big Brown's also tend to be the first bats active at dusk. As with other
bats water is sought after leaving the daytime roost before the night hunt
begins. Preferred
hunting habitat tends to be over bodies of water, forest clearings and riparian
vegetation, places where a variety of insects tend to congregate. Certain types of
beetles and Hemipteran true bugs are preferred. Big
brown bats are solitary animals during the summer months, except when pregnant
females form maternity colonies. two is the ordinary brood in the northern part
of its range. Man-made
structures tend to be the favorite over wintering spots for this and many other
bats.
